FQH Workshop at BioFach 2008: “Organic Food Quality and Health – latest research findings“

On March 21st, FQH organised, as in previous years, an interesting Workshop at the BioFach Conference in Nuremberg. The Workshop, introduced and moderated by Manon Haccius (Alnatura, D), was attended by an audience of approximately 70 people.
Speakers were: Lucy van de Vijver (Louis Bolk Institute, NL), on “Organic food consumption and allergy. The KOALA Birth Cohort Study”, Ewa Rembialkowska (Warsaw University, P), on “The content of bioactive compounds in organically and conventionally produced plant crops” and Machteld Huber (Louis Bolk Institute, NL) on “Organic, More Healthy? A search for bio-markers. Results of the Dutch study 2005 – 2007”. The presentations are published on the members area of this website.

Organic feed makes the immune system more alert

Organic feed leads to a more alert immune system. Chicken, fed with organic feed, showed a lower weight and a stronger recovery of their weight gain after an immunological challenge. These remarkable differences are the main findings in the study “Organic, More Healthy? A search for biomarkers of potential health effects induced by organic products, investigated in a chicken model”.
On December 13th the final report of the study was presented to the Dutch Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. The research was conducted by the Louis Bolk Institute in cooperation with Wageningen UR, RIKILT Institute for food safety and TNO, in dialogue with the International Research Association for Organic Food Quality and Health, FQH. The final report is approved by the FQH-board as a FQH report, with the FQH logo on the cover.

Organic dairy products are associated with lower incidence of eczema

Resarchers of the University of Maastricht and the Louis Bolk Institute in Driebergen (Netherlands) concluded that consumption of organic dairy products is associated with a lower incidence of eczema for children in the first 2 years of their life. The effects of organic foods on eczema and other atopic diseases are investigated in the KOALA-project. The results are recently published in the British journal of Nutrition:

Cover: Handbook of Organic Food Safety and QualityHandbook of Organic Food Safety and Quality

In June 2007, the Handbook of Organic Food Safety and Quality, edited by J. Cooper, U. Niggli and C. Leifert, was published. Due to increasing consumer demand for safe, high quality, ethical foods, the production and consumption of organic food and produce has increased rapidly over the past two decades. In recent years the safety and quality of organic foods has been questioned. If consumer confidence and demand in the industry is to remain high, the safety, quality and health benefits of organic foods must be assured. The Handbook of organic food safety and quality provides a comprehensive review of the latest research in the area.

FQH Scientific Workshop Stuttgart-Hohenheim, March 19, 2007, Castle Hohenheim

On March 19, 2007, an inspiring Scientific Workshop with FQH-members took place in which the design of excellent experiments on food quality and excellent animal feeding experiments - the two corner stones of FQH research - were discussed. A summary of the workshop as well as the presentations given by Johannes Kahl and Eva Rembialkowska will be published on the members area of this website soon. In the end of 2007 as a result of the workshop two papers will be produced for publication in a peer reviewed journal.

Healthier organic milk from free range cows

Organic Milk can help prevent diseases like chronic heart disease and heart attack, rheumatism and cancer by providing more omega-3 fatty acids and CLAs than conventional milk. A study from the University of Kassel using the gas chromatography analysis and carbon13 isomer analysis detected clear advantages for organic milk and could reveal that some milk comes not from “happy cows” grazing on the grass in contrast to their advertising motives. arrowRead more here!

FQH Workshop in Odense on the 29th of May 2006

“Where do we come from and where should we go?”

Working group 3 with Angelika PloegerOn May 29th 2006 FQH had a one day workshop in Odense concerning food quality concepts and food quality parameters in organic research. 30 participants from 10 different countries joined this workshop.

In the morning a background for the further discussion was created by FQH board-members giving presentations on historical quality concepts and FQH members speaking about three different crops.

The afternoon was filled with working-groups and discussions.

On the way to a new systemic research approach for organic food quality and health

Discussing organic quality research: Jürgen Strube (KWALIS),

participants of the 1st scientific FQH arrow More pictures

More than 50 researchers and supporters of the organic food sector met at the 1st scientific FQH conference from November 28th to 29th at the FQH research member institution FIBL in Frick (Switzerland).

The two days were filled with presentations of latest research results of well-named scientists from across Europe covering topics from farm to table such as quality parameters of organic food, human health, the definition of quality and consumer expectations and legal legislation for organic food.
The conference was embedded in two scientific discussions about the scientific future of organic quality research chaired by Hardy Vogtmann (president of the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation) and Angelika Ploeger (FQH chairperson), respectively. As a clear baseline both discussions revealed that there is an absolute need for a new organic quality concept and for more international scientific communication prior to the development of new research programmes.

To carry on the discussions and work intensely on a new concept a next meeting will be planned for the near future in 2006.

All presentations are available as abstracts in the conference proceedings. A PDF version can be downloaded. For more information on the content of the abstracts or to obtain full presentations contact the authors via the e-mail addresses provided in the abstracts.

Is organic food healthier? – A recent contribution by FQH

Better taste, high nutritional value and health benefits are what consumers expect of organic food. Although many findings indicate positive health qualities of organic food, further scientific work is needed in this area.

An article published in the ÖKO-TEST BioFach-Messejournal 2004 (BioFach trade fair bulletin) gives a brief overview of the activities of the Organic Food Quality and Health Research Association – Organic FQH.
